Bilbao.- The bullfights are not even pleasing their own fans, reveals the leading article of the French bullfighting magazine ‘Toros’, which in the edition of last 18th September reports the declarations of Matías González, president of the bullring of ‘Vista Alegre’ (which translates as ‘Happy Sight’), in Bilbao, who admits “to feeling surprised on having realise that the public applauds no matter what. He sums it up in a few words: “the first third has become a pure formality, and the toreadors are really not interested in the fight. As for the death, the principal target now is the rapidity”. One of the principal persons in charge of the organizing committee of bullfights of Bilbao, Luís Díaz of Lezana, affirms equally that he does not feel satisfied with the 2009 Bullfights, since “the stars” do not want “difficult” bullfights with highly aggressive bulls. The administrative committee of the Bilbao bullring wants to ‘square the circle’ with harder and more aggressive bullfights and by using “stars”, even though the two are in direct contradiction to one another. If in Vista Alegre the toreador does not kill the bull “according to the rules”, it is considered to be a matter of simple formality. These are a few formalities that do not even convince the supposed fans and that cause enormous unnecessary pain to an innocent being.
