Barcelona. – Things must be looking bad for La Mesa del Toro (a European bullfighting association) when they have had to resort to asking the Commission of Government of Andalusia, including the President, to draw on public money to invite the deputies of Parliament of Catalonia to visit Andalusia in order to be told about “the reality of the bulls”. The attraction of the warm welcome, good food especially the famous acorn fed Iberian ham, the comfortable accommodation and the beautiful scenery and pastures can provide a strong inducement to change opinions. Animal lovers have known for years about the use of this insidious system of enticement and how it has been used to persuade, especially, correspondents of important agencies or foreign mass media. Once the invitees have been charmed by the friendliness of the people and the beauty of the scenery, the subject is skilfully turned towards the topic of “bulls“ and they can be fooled by this manipulation if they lack a deeper knowledge of the reality of this cruelty.
All Spanish people, including the Catalan deputies, know all about the reality of bullfights, even if they have never attended one, yet the practice continues. We want to, and should be able to, believe in the honesty of our political representatives. Since the restrictions that have been placed on the ‘perks’ offered to politicians after instances of corruption, it should be impossible that any deputy of the Parliament accepts this poisoned invitation especially now when they are engaged in the process of deciding upon the Popular Initiative for the suppression of the bullfights in Catalonia. Bad timing, the worst possible time, to issue this invitation.
