Loja, Ecuador.- The city of Loja, situated to the south of Ecuador, declared itself in April an “anti bullfighting city, free of bullfights and other forms of animal maltreatment”. Loja is considered an enclave of the Ecuadoran culture, where many intellectuals of national importance reside, such as Benjamín Carrión, founder of the House of the Ecuadoran Culture and Manuel Carrión Pinzano, promoter of the Top Court of Justice, among others. The Lojano council accepted the proposal to prohibit bullfights in the city declaring it free of bullfights and other forms of animal maltreatment. At the same time they agreed to proceed with an ordinance to extend animal protection, which includes the prohibition of circuses with animals and sanctions for those who break the ordinance.
