France .- The French Ministry of Culture has registered bullfights as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage”. This is despite the fact that the vast majority of French people are opposed to these spectacles and that they are prohibited and considered by the Penal Code, as abuse and cruelty to animals in 90% of French territory . French people are embarrassed that their country is unique in the world in regarding bullfighting as part of their heritage. The bullfighting lobby are attempting to influence UNESCO to have bullfights declared “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”, which would allow them to receive substantial government subsidies.. French animal defenders are calling call for a rapid reaction against this statement. Visit the website of the group of associations that support the campaign in France and sign the petition www.patrimone-corrida.fr. Spread the word and demonstrate in front of French Ministry of Culture on Saturday 28 May 2011.
