Nîmes, June 2011. In May -the antibullfighting affiliation ‘Alliance Anticorrida’ sent an open letter to the Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand. The initiative was taken in collaboration with 6 large French affiliations and was published in the newspaper Le Parisien. Now the Alliance has decided to go further and has just presented, through the lawyer Frédéric Ortega, of the Nimes Law College, an appeal to annul the recent decision of the Department of Culture to designate the bullfights as part of the immaterial cultural heritage of France. This appeal is accompanied with a “ Priority Question of Constitutionality ” questioning the conformity of the legislative texts as applied to bullfights. It should be remembered that bullfights are considered to be animal maltreatment and a crime in 90 % of French territory.
