Lisboa. – In Portugal, the bullfight has experienced the biggest ever known opposition, after continued victories by animal lovers. Last year, a Lisbon court prohibited the broadcasting of a bullfight show before 22.30, in line with the schedule designed to protect children from unsuitable viewing. The judgment made it quite clear that what was being talked about was a violent spectacle. As consequence, the mayors of Braga, Cascais and Sintra also took measures to prevent such broadcasts in their communities. Thanks to an intense national and international campaign, animal lovers also managed to prevent the Regional Parliament of the Azores from legalizing bullfights with horse-rmounted fighters, which would have added to the extreme violence that is already presented in these spectacles.
