Lima (Peru) .- Last October 28th, 2009, a press conference was held in the Congress of the Republic of Peru, which was attended by the legislator José Urquizo Magia and the National Anti bullfighting Organization of Peru. The conference was held to address the expectation of the public to be informed about what actions to take before the next Bullfighting Fair, that of the Señor de los Milagros´ (Master of the Miracles). The conference developed from the national campaign of sensitization on the inappropriateness of supporting cruel traditions involving animals, such as bullfights. According to the Anti bullfighting organization, bullfighting commits an outrage against defenceless beings, and against the right to live in a culture of peace. The intention of the conference was to exhort the political authorities of the country to debate and approve the project of Law nº 496 for the abolition of this and other forms of maltreatment to animals. According to the last polls carried out at national level by Datum in Peru, 68 % of Peruvians are against bullfights and only 9 % in favour of them; the last poll of the University of Lima affirms that 73 % of the natives of Lima are opposed to such spectacles and only 27 % approve of them.
