Rioja. – The Euro MP of the Commission of Agriculture and Rural Politics, Maria Esther Herranz García continues to make declarations in favour of the bullfights. Her line is that, rather than addressing the apparent irrationality of the bullfights, that she believes that everyone in the bullring “respects” the animal and those who say differently do not understand the “art” that is displayed in the square
In a conference on Europe and bullfights, organized by the bullfighting group “El quite”, in Rioja. Herranz asserted the “injustice” of prohibiting the bullfighting culture, appealing to the well-worn argument of tradition. But can this viewpoint hold water: does the argument of “tradition” justify torture for fun? The Euro MP also remains ignorant of the studies, prepared by prestigious investigation companies, which make all too clear the rejection by the vast majority of the Spanish to bullfighting. That Herranz, also, justifies the subsidies that the stockbreeders receive because, “the care of the pastures classifies them as agricultural environments”. It is an absurd argument that reveals the absence of thoroughness and information at the time of declaring a position on the bullfights. The Euro MP should go beyond these limited viewpoints and ask himself, ‘what has ‘agricultural environment’ to do with the killing of an animal as a spectacle’, rather than choosing to ignore the suffering undergone by the bull in this type of “traditionally Spanish” spectacle.
