Barcelona. – On December 18 last, the Catalan Parliament gave the go-ahead to the Legislative Popular Initiative (ILP), supported by 180.000 citizens’ signatures. Sixty seven deputies voted against the amendments presented by the PSC, PP and Ciutadans parties to this popular Initiative. The object of the ILP is to remove the shameful exception of bullfighting that is incorporated into the current animal protection law in Catalonia. This law prohibits the use of animals in “fights and spectacles” if thereby suffering is caused or the animal receives treatment that is “contrary to nature”. Solely bullfighting is excluded from this legislation, only the fighting bulls are denied the protection offered by this law. If the ILP succeeds in its progress through Parliament, Catalonia would become, after the Canary Islands, the second autonomous region in Spain to prohibit bullfights.
