Portugal. – The Animal organization, of Portugal, together with Cas International, and the United Kingdom League against Cruel Sports has called for the Chinese government and to the officials of the city of Beijing, to forbid the introduction of bullfighting and any activity related to the bullfight world in their country. A part of the Spanish industry, headed by the bull killer Manolo Sánchez, is trying to introduce bullfighting in China. A project has been broached that proposes the building of a permanent bullring in the city of Beijing. The promoters of this initiative want to try to organise at least 16 bullfights per year in the period between June and September. It is not the first attempt to introduce this bloody activity in other countries, though it is the strongest to date. The bullfighting industry is in crisis in Europe and Latin America, due to the severe economic difficulties derived from the social and political opposition to this practice in the whole world. Many promoters of bullfights try to export bullfights to other countries like, in this case, China where bullfights have never before existed, in a desperate attempt to save this crippled industry.

Lisboa. – The denunciations of Portuguese animal lovers has prevented the child Michelito Lagravère, just eleven years of age, from fighting in the ‘Campo Pequeno’ square in Lisbon. The participation of the minor in this becerrada (a fight with an animal of one or two years old and weighing approximately 250 kg) and other bullfights had been eagerly anticipated by bullfight fans.

However a complaint was presented by affiliations for the defense of animal well-being before the authority responsible for enforcing labor legislation and the office of protection for the children of Lisbon. The services for protection of minors considered that the child was being placed in serious danger, which was considerd contrary to regulations on conditions of work and protection of minors, especially those taking part in spectacles. The denunciation emphasized that article 32 of the Convention of the United Nations on the Rights of the Child, of which Portugal is a signatory, disallows minors from taking part in bullfights. The services of protection of minors notified the promoters of the spectacle that the participation of Lagravère was not authorized. During the last year also two bullfights were prohibited in France in Fontvielle and Arlès in which children were planned to take part, after the formal protests interposed by animal lovers before the authorities.

Lisboa. – In Portugal, the bullfight has experienced the biggest ever known opposition, after continued victories by animal lovers. Last year, a Lisbon court prohibited the broadcasting of a bullfight show before 22.30, in line with the schedule designed to protect children from unsuitable viewing. The judgment made it quite clear that what was being talked about was a violent spectacle. As consequence, the mayors of Braga, Cascais and Sintra also took measures to prevent such broadcasts in their communities. Thanks to an intense national and international campaign, animal lovers also managed to prevent the Regional Parliament of the Azores from legalizing bullfights with horse-rmounted fighters, which would have added to the extreme violence that is already presented in these spectacles.

Lisboa (Portugal).-Animal well-being affiliations have already denounced the performance of Miguelito Lagravére, the so-called child toreador who is only 11 years of age. What is exercising French authorities is the fact that he has violated article 223-1 of the Penal French Code, in putting his own life in danger. Alerted to his performance, the district attorney has already initiated an investigation on this matter. Thanks to the intervention of animal supporters in other similar cases, a condemnation has now been achieved resulting in the bullfighters ´El Juli´ and Andy Cartagena being prohibited by Robert Pilés, the director of the bullring of Nimes, from taking part in a bull fight.
