France.- Last 13/12/2009, the Union of French bullfighting cities (UVTF) announced with great fanfare, that they have taken steps to request the inclusion of bullfighting culture in the Intangible Heritage of UNESCO . However, to be presented to UNESCO, the application requires prior approval by the French State. The French anti-bullfighting Association Alliance Anticorrida , has asked to the Minister of Culture, Frédéric Mitterrand, the following question:

How could the Ministry of Culture decently encourage the survival of an archaic spectacle based upon torture of bulls, when the Ministry is responsible for making available to the largest number of people the major works of humanity and encouraging the creation of works of art to enrich the spirit? Surprisingly, Pierre Hanoteaux , Chief of Cabinet , answered on 10 July 2010, that “to date, our Ministry has not received any official request from UVTF.”

Ceret, France.- Last 11th July, 2010, 22 antibullfighting activists from the organizations CRAC EUROPE and ONE VOICE gained access, having paid for their entry tickets, to the bullring of Ceret in order to place two banners of 3 meters long with the inscriptions “bullfight = barbarism” and “bullfight = torture”. Twelve of the activists who managed to jump to the bullring were insulted and savagely struck by toreadors and their assistants. Finally, employees of a private security company took charge, throwing them from the bullring. According to members of CRAC EUROPE and ONE VOICE, the police, who were in attendance, did not intervene to stop the aggressions. Some of the activists had to be seen by the medical services after having received the brutal beating. (July, 2010)

Madrid.- ANPBA, who have their head office in Madrid, has announced that it will present an appeal before the Top Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) against the judgment that rejected the prohibition of the festival of bous “embolats” (bulls with fire on their horns) and “capllaçats” (bulls with roped horns) in the south of Tarragona.
In the ANPBA appeal various judgments of the Provincial Hearing of Palencia and of the Top Court of Justice of Madrid are presented, where it is admitted that the celebrations of bulls messes and ensogados involves ill-treatment toward the animals. Also, it adds, these types of celebration are implicitly prohibited in Catalan legislation, which recognizes the “physical sensibility” of the animals. (July, 2010)

Funtesaúco, Zamora, Spain.- A 19-year-old young man died in the early hours of Saturday morning after being gored in the chest during the nighttime running of the bulls held in Fuentesaúco. Apparently, the young man was throwing earth onto a bull from a window when he fell out. The sub delegate of the Government remarked that these celebrations “are dangerous” and that all those who take part in them, “must be aware of the danger that they run.” The mayor of Fuentesaúco, Jaime Vega, is evaluating the possibility of proposing the suppression of these night bull running events, which are also called “frighteners.” Once more a death that was completely avoidable and serves only to underline the absurdity of this type of event, which should be suppressed as soon as possible.
