Quito (Ecuador) November 2012. – The company that organizes the Feria de Quito has decided to suspend it “because of the current climate of controversy, threats and opposition that exist in the city.” They claim they want to avoid “confrontation” with the anti-bullfighting supporters. Nonetheless, in a letter to the Municipality of Quito, they recognize the real reason, that is “the concern and lack of interest of bullfighting lobby and supporters in the face of the ban of killing the bull in the bullring” that “indicates an unviable business landscape” . We recall that in May 2011, President Correa urged a referendum in Ecuador to ban the shows intended to finish in the death of the animal. In Quito, a majority of citizens voted in favor of the ban and since 2011, bulls are not killed on the ring but away from the audience’s sight, a practice that does not lessen the cruelty of bullfighting.

Nimes (France), November 2012. – The entrepreneur of Nimes bullring, Simon Casas, has been giving since 2011 a reduced VAT rate of 5.5% in the bullfights he organized, instead of the compulsory 19.6% , paying out the difference (14.1%) from his own pocket. This practice has been denounced by the Anti Corrida Alliance which finds it “pathetic”, since by law, bullfights do not benefit from any reduction in VAT and, as stated to l ‘Alliance Anti Corrida by the Minister of Culture Aurélie Filipetti, the fact that they are classed as a Cultural Heritage of France gives them no entitlement to any reduction.

Nimes (France), November 2012. – The French Justice system has imposed a heavy fine on a breeder from Vassas ranch for mistreating his bulls. He was found to have not provided food or water to the animals and to have left them in a place considered hazardous. In March 2011, following a complaint from animal rights organizations, his livestock consisting of 110 bulls were taken away. When police arrived at the ranch, 10 bulls had already died from exhaustion. However, this conviction does not forbid him to keep animals or to work in a profession involving animals and so, unfortunately, this situation could be repeated.

France, October 20, 2012. -. Several hundred anti-bullfighting demonstrators protested against the decision of the French Contitutional Court to maintain bullfighting in some southern cities. The three demos took place simultaneously in Paris, Nimes and Toulouse, under different slogans “Torture is not our culture” , “the death of an animal is not a show”, “Bullfights?, no thanks.” In Paris, Christophe Marie, representing the Brigitte Bardot Foundation and Jean Pierre Garrigues of CRAC Europe, were received by an official of the Minister of Culture, Aurélie Flipetti. In Nîmes protesters formed the word “Stop Bullfight” in front of the city bullring.
The anti-bullfighting groups want to keep the pressure on in the light of an upcoming parliamentary initiative by MP Geneviève Gaillard. Madame Gaillard will submit to the National Assembly a bill to amend the Criminal Code section that authorizes bullfights in some cities of the South of France.

Dax (France). – On October 14th, the city of Dax had planned to held a bullfight with the excuse that the event would raise funds for ‘Emaus’, a secular charity devoted to helping the poor. However animal defenders, led by Alliance Anti Corrida through emails, social networks and a petition on Change.org digital platform, mobilized and convinced the Board of Emaus in Bordeaux to refuse the donation. Furthermore those at the head of the charity have declared that they do not support bullfighting. Thankfully many French charities, unlike their Spanish counterparts, are not seduced by the wiles of the bullfighting lobby and wish to distance themselves from the barbarity of bullfighting, an attitude much applauded by animal defenders.

Toro (Zamora) in August 2012. – While nobody questions the work of Caritas, the Catholic Charity, in helping the poorest in society, it is morally unacceptable that this charity cooperates with some municipalities which organize bullfighting events to raise funds for them. This time it was the town of Toro (Zamora) that held a fight with young bulls (becerrada). ADDA sent a letter to Cáritas headquarters to condemn this reprehensible collaboration. We had no response. For how long will the Spanish Catholic Church continue to sully its name by lending its support to the barbarity of bullfighting?

Bogotà (Colombia), 31 August, 2012. – The mayor of Bogota, Gustavo Petro, despite having stated that he wanted no more bullfights in his municipality, proposed to the bullfighting corporation a “compromise” to continue holding bullfights but without death of the bull. His proposed compromise would have done away with the pike, the banderillas (sticks) and the sword. However, bullfight supporters categorically refused the compromise adding that they consider such fights “illegal” being in contravention of the rules of bullfighting in Colombia. Accordingly, the Corporation has delivered the arena to the city of Bogotá. We hope that the Mayor Petro has finally understood that he should not “negotiate” on animal suffering.

La Cava, Deltebre, August 16, 2012. A 44 year old man died when a charging bull brought down the protective fence during a bull running event or correbous. The mayor of La Cava, Gervasi Aspa, said that preparations for the correbous met the highest standards of safety and certainly this fatal accident is due to an “unfortunate occurrence.” This is the first serious accident to occur at one of these events since the new bull running law came into force in Catalonia against opposition from animal advocates and the majority of the Catalan public. The law acts to protect these spectacles, allowing both people and animals to be placed in situations of danger. The season continues and undoubtedly there will be more such “unfortunate occurrences.”
