Caceres, April 2012. – Miguel Ibañez, head of Ethology of the Veterinary School of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and a member of the Association of Veterinary Abolitionists of bullfighting, AVAT, gave a lecture to students of Bullfighting in the auditorium of the veterinary faculty of Caceres. He especially emphasised the terrible physical suffering endured by the bull. Ibanez contested a study presented in 2007 by other veterinarians, ( the Illera Report ) which maintained that bulls are somehow endowed with a special capacity to endure pain and manage it to suffer less . He also talked about the inherent anachronism and contradiction of veterinarians supporting these events and even giving awards to breeders of bulls for these events.

Catalonia, April 23, 2012. – The Catalan Government has authorized the municipality of Aldover, in the province of Tarragona, to organise two bull runs with young bulls and a bull of fire on the occasion of Sant Jordi festivity. This is a cruel way of overshadowing an emblematic Catalan festivity which is well-known around the world. The symbols of Saint Jordi are the book and the rose which represent the values of culture, sensitivity and good feelings. This is not compatible with taking pleasure in the tormenting of an animal.

Madrid. – The MP Josep Pujals Nuet of the ICV-EUiA, has sent to the Spanish government two questions concerning the total annual cost for the Spanish radio and TV channels of programs related to bullfighting, during the period 2007-2011 . The figures are dizzying and shocking: the program “Tendido Zero” reports a total expenditure of 5,971,450.56 Euros. In addition, regarding the retransmission of the annual San Fermin running of the bulls it gives the figure of 3,042,775.36 Euros. In short, RTVE has spent in total, from 2007 to 2011, 9,014,225.92 Euros. Shameful!

The bull killers called for an absurd and surreal recognition of the “intellectual property” of their bullfights, as is usual with the singers for their live performances. Also, they continue to insist that bullfighting is declared an item of cultural interest.

March 2012.- the French Antibullfighting Federation, FLAC reported a new trick of the National Observatory of Bullfighting Cultures,ONCT, the standard bearer of the bullfighting lobby in France. Their latest dirty trick is to produce a forged list of psychiatrists (mostly from southern France) who alledgedly signed a statement drafted by the ONCT, which maintains that bullfighting has an ”educational” function for children . According to the bullfighting lobby, 150 psychiatrists and academics signed the declaration, but the reality is very different: firstly there are not 150 psychiatrists but 141; secondly the list includes the names of two people who do not exist; thirdly among the 91 responses received, 51 doctors (65%) did not sign teh staement, either because they oppose its content (54%) or because they abstained. In addition, 11 psychiatrists have expresed their opposition to the conduct of the ONCT. In short, only 20 psychiatrists, or 22%, agreed with the contents of the “manifesto”.

It is not the first time that the French bullfighting lobby has resorted to lies. In 2010, during the process of the ILP who managed to ban bullfights in Catalonia, they sent to Members of the Catalan Parliament, a supposed list of French deputies and mayors in support of the Catalan bullfighting lobby. This list, also, was proved to have been falsified.

Madrid, March 28, 2012. – The Official Gazette of the Community of Madrid, CAM, issued a decree regulating the Culture Awards given annually by CAM in order to incorporate bullfighting to these awards. The prizes are endowed with the not inconsiderable amount of 18,000 euros. In July 2011, responsibility for bullfighting was transferred from the Ministry of Internal Affairs to the Ministry of Culture, under the former government of the Socialist Party. Just before the general elections, the then Minister of Culture, Gonzalez-Sinde included bullfighting in the national awards granted by the Ministry of Culture each year which are endowed with 30,000 euros. In addition, almost every year a bullfighter is awarded with the Medal of Fine Arts . In short, bullfighting receives many more awards than any truly artistic activity (painting, music, sculpture, theater, etc..).
